in conversation with Rob and Lilian from Ghost of a Rose from Brasil.
1 - In 2007 the same year as Blackmore..s Night had 10 years
anniversary you, Rob, performed with Ghost of a Rose alongside your
sister. Was this inspired by the BN anniversary?
Rob - Thanks for oportunity for interview to the best from ole in norway!!!
Well, Not Really, the project started around the middle of 2006. I and Lilian started working with musicians and add the same interest in 2007 to our happiness in 2007 was an opportunity for our first show so we shall celebrate the 10 years of BN being a tribute band to a local bar, was very gratifying because this show was a tribute to the work of Ritchie and Candice was wonderful even a "love work" our for them.
Lilian - It was not easy to find musicians for this project because most of all people seeking to have the same passion that we have the BN, including the band went through changes in education since its debut, we are happy to have coincided with the anniversary of 10 years the band and the show was wonderful because we realize that in our city and in Brazil there are many fans who really love the work of Candice and Ritchie. We're flattered to provide this tribute and bring a little of the magic of the BN to Brazilian fans.
2 - Brazil is to me, musically, drums and the carnival music, how did you siblings get into the medieval, folk style of BN?
Lilian - The Brazilian Carnaval is so popular that those who do not know the country, its culture and music no idea of the musical variety found here. However, our appreciation for the medieval period eventually leading us to meet a medieval music as well. Moreover, already known the work of Ritchie and his fans just as knowing the BN and simply in love with this work.
Rob - Good Brazilian music is a music with various "mix" of rhythms, both Latin, African and world music, the variety is rich, but I lilian and we love music and medieval history for our taste is varied but always listen to international rock, classical music and know when the BN love the sound is a mix and I still more to be a big fan of Ritchie Blackmore.
3 - How would you describe the interest for BN music in Brazil?
Rob - I had a big surprise because there are many fans from BN in Brazil, discovered by many means of media as sites of relationships, many fans, including requesting our shows in various regions of Brazil, so it was surprising the number of BN who are fans of BN and there are more and more people discover the every day.
Lílian - It is amazing, every show that we understand the affection of the Brazilian public by BN. They sing, dance and were delighted with the interaction of the public. I think all of us, dreaming one day see himself the Blackmore..s Night playing here.
4 - The bands name comes from a BN release and song, are we to understand this is your favourite album and song – if so why this?
Lilian - I think the name refers not only to a beautiful song but the best albums of the band. Difficult to choose an album and a favorite song, but surely Ghost of a Rose is one of the best tracks on the album.
Rob- GHOST OF A ROSE is one of the most beautiful works that we have already heard of the BN and the music always moved us and touched our hearts and other songs that I love as "Way to Mandalay" and covers rewritten, one in particular that I find it very beautiful, it is "Diamonds and Rust" but the name comes from music that is a beautiful song, a wonderful work of BN.
5 - You have taken on the task of guitar in a tribute band for the legend Ritchie Blackmore – describe him as a guitarist and composer.
Rob - Ritchie Blackmore, hard to describe, in the Deep Purple, certainly the most beautiful guitar riffs I have seen made for guitar and the work of the most original rock in the'70s years, the Rainbow you see his musicality and dedication in a great musical project and Blackmore's Night, a art work, then it shows all the potential it has as guitarrist, arranger and composer.
I describe my job in this band is a tribute to a legend of the guitar, is a hard work, I find it very rewarding to do this, but it is very difficult at the same time as the dedication to it has to be very large.
6 - Do you try to make the songs as similar as possible, or do you try to put your own versions, although very alike?
Rob - We try to bring in as much as possible of the original sound, but there are moments that put some personal touches.
Lílian - In our shows, there is so much interaction with the audience the band, which sometimes just improvising our personal touch in the songs, but never forgetting that we have to bring as much as possible of the original.
7 - Why do a tribute band and not your own thing?
Rob - Our BN tribute band, started in order to be a tribute to the work of Blackmore's Night, but studied the possibility of also doing a band with a very similar work and a similar song style as much like thinking about that possibility and it is something we desire.
8 - Ghost of a Rose also plays Rainbow and Deep Purple covers in their concerts – what songs are the favourites?
Rob - The band play some classical songs of Rainbow and Deep Purple, especially the song rewritten by BN as Street of Dreams (Rainbow), Soldier of Fortune (Deep Purple), and sometimes Black Night and Smoke on the water when the public asks. My favorite is the Rainbow is Man On The Silver Montain, I Surrender, Sixteen Century Greensleaves are in Purple is Highway Star, Burn, Fireball.
Lilian - I love the Child in time, I love the vocal arrangement made by the BN. And the Street of Dreams. And Black Night, the audience really loves it!
9 - Was Ritchie better in Rainbow than Purple, in your opinion?
Rob - Hard to say, his work is very beautiful in the bands, I also play in Tribute Band of Deep Purple and Rainbow, I think all his work very good, there is no compare in the work because I listen differences in the songs, but listen to the beautiful works with their differences
10 - Do you get many jobs with your band?
Rob - The tour dates always have shows, and we work very dedicated and it traveled to the maximum we can build our name as Brazillian Tribute Band.
Lílian - Unfortunately, we can not do as many shows as we would like because of the band all have other jobs because the band is not our means of income. Here in Brazil we can not financially dependent on this project, because there is not much space, but it is an honor to perform this project, therefore makes us grow musically, meet other fans of BN and of course it is wonderful to see the affection the public by the BN.
11 - How does Lilian describe the voice of Candice?
Lílian - One of the most beautiful voices I ever heard. Candice can be sweet voice but when she need to show a strong voice and can express all your feeling and emotion when singing. More over, its beauty and friendly love to all. It combines all the qualities of a perfect singer.
12 - What are the plans and ambitions for the band in 2009, will you record any material for instance, or go on tour?
Rob - This year we are mixing a recording which is the band's recording of a live show in a local bar called Woodstock Music Bar. We are in the studio mixing the end of this demo tape that contains a live show we recorded whole. In addition to tour of Brazil, are seeking contacts in Latin America, because I had a surprise to the audience of BN in Brazil, of course I am optimistic countries such as Argentina and Chile with an audience similar to ours.
13 - Do you know anything at all about Norwegian music or musicians?
Lilian - I know of Norway traditional music. I know some bands, such as Tristania and coincidentally also play in a band tribute to Tristania. Knowing some bands, I understand that Norway and is a beautiful country also has excellent musicians. I would love know more about his music and its culture.
Rob - Well, I know who Tristania is, unfortunately not traditional music of Norway. Had no contact so far, but now that you told me I am searching for something, because I love learning about new cultures and different music.
