Deep Purple ‘Concerto for Group and Orchestra’.
Yes I was there!! At the Royal Albert Hall in London for the most
spectacular concert with Deep Purple and the Royal Philharmonic
Orchestra! Of course, I still have the original LP (Harvest SHVL 767)
Hey, I’m in the photo of the crowd somewhere!
I was very fortunate because I worked for many record companies in an
era that was never to be repeated. It meant that I have fantastic
memories of seeing great rock bands up close. This was one of the
greatest concerts (although being at the Albert Hall to see Pink Floyd
and watch Rick Wright walking round the enormous theatre and up all the
stairs to the Royal Albert Hall organ to perform ‘Saucerful Of Secrets’
– is a pretty close second!!)
Anyway…………….. I was a huge Deep Purple fan and my father was a very musical person. He always said that rock music was nowhere near as good as classical music, so here was my chance to defend it!
I took my dad to see Deep Purple play with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall. (Hey, not many people can say that!)
At first it was the strangest feeling of all, to see an orchestra playing the first movement and Deep Purple sitting on the same stage. There were smiles all around the place as we sat and listened. I can remember the moment that the band joined in – it was sensational! The orchestra were grinning like crazy, the sound was outrageous!
A battle began. Ritchie Blackmore’s guitar dominating the melody – and then the orchestra gaining control again, Deep Purple fighting back. It was hard to know where to look. Malcolm Arnold (the conductor) was having the time of his life and then Jon Lord would take over. (The saying ‘you had to be there’ comes to the forefront of my mind!)
When Ritchie Blackmore blew the whole place apart with his solo, my dad was on his feet! I can remember him pointing at him and telling me that what Ritchie was playing was nearly impossible! No one could arppegiate notes as fast as that!
He was absolutely stunning.
When the Concerto came to an end, I really think the battle was a draw.
You could compare the violins with the outstanding vocal range of Ian Gillan, you could compare the timpani with Ian Paice’s drumming – you could even compare Malcolm Arnold with Jon Lord, but that wasn’t it. It was done. The two came together in a way I don’t think we will ever see or hear again
My dad’s opinion? He still thought that ‘all other rock bands were no good, but that Ritchie Blackmore! Well, he was just from another planet!’

Fra MKI til MKII med fokus på september og oktober 1969
Resten av 1968 er travel. Den inkluderer innspilling av ”Book of
Taliesyn” i august og utgivelse i oktober. Det tredje albumet, kalt
”Deep Purple” spilles inn i januar 1969.
Det knirker i skuta, en del interne problemer og meningsforskjeller har
oppstått. I mai sparkes Simper og Evans ut og de tre resterende vil
ha mer hardrock. Siste og tredje albumet med MKI ”Deep Purple” slippes
i juli.
framføringen av Concerto for Group and Orchestra i Albert hall London,
den får my oppmerksomhet i UK gjennom mye fokus i media. Den vises på
BBC. Konserten tas opp og gis ut. Den gir bandet deres første
plassering blant de 30 beste på UK listen.
